Juggling human insects, anyone? / Photo courtesy of Cirque Du Soleil |
As we entered the arena, right there in the middle of the stage, a huge, no, gigantic, egg sits silently. It does nothing, yet its stillness commands an imposing presence. An air of control that immediately captures your attention and gnaws at your curiosity. Then I saw insects...and my skin crawled.
But not of fear, but anticipation of the amazing things they're going to do.
TALENTED INSECTS and CREEPY CRAWLIES
In real life, you'll probably be screaming at the sight of them but at Ovo, you'll be doing the same thing but of sheer delight and awe.
Antsy Ants
This six-member ensemble was one of the crowd's favorite and rightly so. They made human juggling look effortless!
Sneaky Spiders
Unsuspicious-looking White, Red and Black Spiders, but watch out for the White one! She's mind-boggling. She's my favorite however.

Gracious Dragonfly
A very elegant-looking one at that, but he's got tons of tricks up his sleeves!
COMIC RELIEF
In-between the death-defying, mind-boggling acts, expect some funny antics from the shows beloved characters: Master Flipo (Scarab Beetle), Coccinelle (Ladybug) and Mouche (Fly), with occasional serenades from the Cockroaches.
Food for thought:
Ovo has all the iconic markers of Cirque Du Soleil's unparalleled high-quality performance. However, this show compared to some of its other themed acts, bordered more towards the light, comedic fun and young kid's circus-appropriate show. There were moments where there was an evident lull and dragging scenes in between acts that seem to slow down the excitement of the show. In spite of that, it's a fun watch and equally deserving of praise and an opportunity to be seen - a great family night out option for sure!
And who knows, you might just be the one who can crack (no pun intended) the mystery behind the egg!

ABOUT OVO:
OVO, meaning “egg” in Portuguese, is a headlong rush into a colorful ecosystem teeming with life, where insects work, eat, crawl, flutter, play, fight and look for love in a non-stop riot of energy and movement. When a mysterious egg appears in their midst, the insects are awestruck and intensely curious about this iconic object that represents the enigma and cycles of their lives. It is love at first sight when a gawky, quirky insect arrives in this bustling community and a fabulous ladybug catches his eye – and the feeling is mutual.
The cast of OVO is comprised of 52 performing artists from 14 countries specializing in many acrobatic acts. OVO is now a Cirque du Soleil classic. It features over 10 different high level acrobatic acts such as Foot juggling & Icarian games, Hand balancing, Contortion, Aerial Straps, Slackwire, Russian Cradle and a signature final act mixing Trampoline, Tumbling & Rock-climbing.
The Creative Team behind the world of OVO is: Artistic Guides Guy Laliberté and Gilles Ste-Croix; Writer, Director and Choreographer Deborah Colker (first female director at Cirque du Soleil); Director of Creation Chantal Tremblay; Set and props Designer Gringo Cardia; Costume Designer Liz Vandal; Composer and Musical Director Berna Ceppas; Lighting Designer Éric Champoux; Sound Designer Jonathan Deans and for the first time at Cirque du Soleil: Rigging and Acrobatic Equipment Designer Fred Gérard; Acrobatic Performance Designer Philippe Aubertin; and Makeup Designer Julie Bégin.
