I Got Married in Jail - Yes, Really!

...Eight years ago today. And I tell you, it's one of those memories that you'll never forget. No, it's not because it's a special day but because of where it took place and what unexpected things happened that day. Let's just say, things got wacky!

No one in our little group have been to a jail central before, so everything got awkward, no, electric-shocked {what can I say, we were in jail}, when we saw a big crowd lined up seeking audience with the Magistrates who will try their cases. Some were erring neighbors yelling at each other and making a huge scene. Lovely. Just lovely my wedding day! But our turn came soon enough. Ah, sweet relief.

You would think.

We were led inside a private room. Peace and quiet finally. Now on with the ceremony. But first, papers and ID's. OMWord! What ID? I don't have any ID with me! NO ID, NO wedding! Oh boy... a woman from another country with Fiancee visa, no ID and trying to get married to an American guy. Brilliant! I bet you can guess what thoughts were running in that Magistrate's head that day!

But I got married anyway.

I twisted the Magistrate's arm, wrestled him to the ground and demand he marry us! Not! But I did manage to charm my way out of that sticky mess AND got married after all!

Unfortunately, the package didn't come with "they live happily ever after" like Cinderella and Prince Charming did, but hey! ours is better than reality TV - full of adventures and whatnots! I wouldn't trade it for anything either way! Although sometimes we want to trade each other for a cat or a doggie, but we still love each other nonetheless.

Thanks to friends and family who wished us well in person and on my Facebook wall.  Don't be expecting another jail wedding repeat anytime soon, but come back after 42 years when we renew our vows.

P.S. Contrary to popular belief, I was NOT arrested as an illegal immigrant and got married in jail to escape deportation. Just sayin...

So, what's your story?

  1. Heh, we got married by the magistrate in Chapel Hill. It was totally uneventful except for that whole "Oh, crap, we don't have any witnesses!" thing. We had to pull a couple of staff members into the ceremony. Awkward.
