I've been asked so many times how I manage to cook meals for a vegetarian spouse when I and my daughter are meat-eaters. Truth is, it's really easy. Made easier with the fact that my daughter and I are Flexitarians - by influence, and smart choice on my part. Rather than cooking two different dishes and giving me more work in the kitchen than I would like to, I choose to stick with the vegetarian option which worked pretty well for us for years now.
With this being said, we have tried and tested every possible "meatless" vegetarian options currently out in the market to supplement mostly of my husband's "meat" protein requirements. We have a few favorite that is a regular in our shopping list. Now, I should say that one of the most hard-to find, good-tasting "meatless" versions of deli meats is the hotdogs. We've tried LightLife before but we were not too impressed with it. However, with their more improved recipe, I think it deserves a second taste-test. This is why when Green Moms Meet asked me to try LightLife Smart Dogs meatless veggie hot dogs, I couldn't resist.
Beyond the Grill
Tis' the season for grilling I know, but when you have limited source of tasteful meatless options to go with your vegetarian dishes, you get creative. Lightlife Smart dogs are no exemption in my culinary creations. I made it go beyond its "normal" role on the grill to take on a delicious "meat" ingredient substitute, straight into my frying pan.
I created a simple stir-fry recipe for lunch today for me and my daughter and we were both impressed! I also cooked the veggie dog on its own so we can get a better taste of it. We loved it in my stir-fry dish. It went well with the vegetables and the flavors of the entire dish.
The veggie dog have a very subtle taste that resembles its meat counterpart that you wouldn't know you're eating the veggie dog version unless pointed out. Its texture was also so similar to that of a hotdog. It was good-tasting enough that even my 12 year old agreed that it tasted good and ate everything on her plate! Now, that's saying a lot!
Veggie dog with Potentials
As with any product, every taste and flavor differ and may not satisfy every consumer's contrasting palate. However, I think LightLife Smart Dogs have the potential for being a great hotdog substitute for the vegetarian who is looking for a veggie version. It has the quality and texture of a good veggie dog but as mentioned beforehand, flavor will always be the deal breaker for most. Though it's worth noting that the smart dogs is Non-GMO, Vegan certified, no nitrates or MSG. Good reasons enough to give it a try!
