Don't Ugly Betty Me

I was looking at myself this morning as I was getting ready for work and I almost screamed at the reflection I saw! Yikes! was that me? was that really me?! Eeks! I've evolved into Ugly Betty! ewww! But If I must say, ugly Betty is better looking than me at this point. She at least wears make-up, I don't. My eyebrows hasn't even been "trimmed" for ages! ack!

Drat! What has happened to me? Tsk Tsk! I have gone awry. I have let myself totally slip to shabbyland! I just realized that I have been going to work and anywhere else looking "bare", presentable but unglamorous! My only "make-up" these days are my Lip Balm (which I just lost - for the nth time! - I have the lost-a-lip-balm-everytime-disease) and a dab of face powder. That's it! so pathetic...

I'm a mommy but I don't need to look like one and dress like one! don't you agree? There's a fine line between looking glam and still being a mommy. I just went and crossed that line and got stuck on the other side of it. My own little Twilight zone! Life's cares has gotten the best of me...Sounds familiar? Yes, and I know I'm not alone.

It is so easy to fall into this rut (or trap). Being a mother, working, Entrepreneuring and being a wife at the same time is a tough job. You just don't have time to look pretty anymore! Well, THAT is my EXCUSE, what's yours ? Hmmm...But there's a way out of this (besides someone kicking my butt to do it). I found It's A Glam Thing to be a treasure trove of tricks and tips on how to look Fabulous (including men)! One of my favorite trick is this:
" Great way to cover up a little grey on the spot is using a little black Mascara. You can paint it on the trouble spot and presto- the grey is gone."
I hate and I mean H-A-T-E grey hairs! I always have this urge to pull it out whenever I see one (even if it was from someone else's head!). Don't ask me why, I just do! So, don't go showing up my door with that grey hair of yours stickin' out. You know exactly what will happen...ah huh...

Anyway, here are a few more excerpts that I thought are worth sharing. This one is from Rosie Johnston of Rosie Jean Cosmetics who also happened to be a Celebrity make up artist in Hollywood.

To look polished but not overdone: Less is more. Women should only define what they have. Always keep it simple. A good Mascara, Pink Cheek and flushed lip is all that's needed to look pulled together and radiant.

Biggest Mistake women make is NOT wearing a Mascara even when they have naturally dark lashes. Or getting all dressed up and only putting lipstick on. Make up is just as important to your overall look as the outfit you chose to wear.

Make up to make you look younger : keep it light. Keep your lip color light. Use natural lip liner and tinted gloss. Dark colored lipstick makes women older.

Secret Tip : use a white iridescent eye shadow just in the inner corner of your eye. It gives an instant pick me up.

Now if you're 40 (just saying) and need a real quick Makeover, Fabulous after 40 has this promising 1 hour Makeover called Tweek-your-chic. Well, I'm not 40 yet and I can't afford the package so I'll just go for Andrea of Chihuahua Bites Makeup Tips and Tricks Bonanza. She even did two parts to share the secrets of the Trade! Go check her out and pick up a thing or two.

In retrospect, I really don't know why makeup plays such a vital role in our lives as women. I guess its' that old-age mentality that it transforms us into this Princess pretty iconic beauty or that we're just an ugly duckling without it! Nonetheless, I've got to get my gears going and start painting. I so need it!

It doesn't matter if they say the greatest beauty is the beauty within. Being ugly Betty, the character is quite OK, but being UGLY is another story!

(I'm so kicking myself now for posting that mugshot of mine next to Betty - I think she looks a tad prettier than I am even with that goofy face. I am so regretting this!) Make up please!!! ahem peeps, I won't mind doing a make up review about now.

P.S. Thanks to all my fellow Etsyian who participated in Nothing but Etsy and bloggy friends who Stumbled it. A lot of peeps saw the stores and I hope this in turn brings more sales to us! (Sorry but I'm going to copy that Coach in that Football commercial when I say ) "AMEN!"

  2. :) good for you! It's important to make yourself feel pretty and perky, ESPECIALLY when you are a mom and you start to feel all drab. I struggle with this all the time. I want to do the casual, jeans and a t-shirt thing I did as an athletic, scrawny teenager... not so attractive now that I'm a "woman." :)

  3. Great suggestions, girlie!! But truly, you are beautiful as you are!!

  4. Thanks for the shout out! You know, I'm going through my own frumpy stage. I'm getting by on way too little sleep lately and in the morning I just get up, put on minimal makeup, and go to work with wet hair. I look like a hot mess! I need to get it together.

  5. Whew. I am so glad you found help before it was too late!

  6. Amen to that - cross back over to the other side of giving yourself 5 minutes for some prep time. :o)

  7. u r too funny! how did you know I never wear Mascara! thanks for the tips!

  8. Great post! I go back and forth with my white hairs - I'd love to them them, but I just don't. I see women who pull off the going-gray- natural thing, but I just don't like the way I look with it. Thanks for stopping by my blog today!

  9. Great beauty tips! And I am a big fan of mascara-no woman should go without it, LOL! :)

  10. Since hearing I'm going to be a grandma, I've glammed up more. I don't want to be the frumpy grandma. I don't know why they seem to go together. I only use certain shirts to wear to bed. I don't feel like I have to change, but I'm sure the 'grandpa' does't mind me wearing the baubles he purchased on his many trips around the world. Cute post. I've never watched Ugly Betty, but I know what it is and can't believe they can make this girl look like that one!!

  11. I totally agree! All of us mommies need to feel pampered and pretty every once in a while. You are right, it's so easy to get into the same old sweat pants/jeans rut. I try to dress up (wearing a nice top & make up) at least a couple times a week. It does a lot to lift my spirit and make me feel good about myself :-)

  12. Lady will you stop it!! You are beautiful. What the heck are you talking about?? HUH?? I repeat... you are beautiful, and your picture isn't a mug shot! LOL.

I want you to feel good when you look in that mirror, so if a little color here and a little color there will do the trick go for it.

Hope you and your family have a great Thanksgiving =)

  17. I think you look lovely too! I'm the ultimate frump as I work at home, do not ever wear make-up and even have some white hairs! But I'm proud of it...

  18. You look great! Stop putting yourself down!

What i'm about to say may shock people: i don't own any make-up. Does chapstick count? I've never worn the stuff. I wanted to buy some this year but i couldn't get any of the stupid women at Sephora to help me. :(

  19. Nice beauty tips!

    Happy Thanksgiving!

  20. You are very cute :-) don't be so hard on yourself. But I love all the beauty tips...I try to make an effort to fix myself up! My bad habit is always throwing my hair in a ponytail....I have thick hair and it takes really long to blow it out. SO....I am pony-tail lady 90% of the time!

  24. Lucky I'm a man, no need to put on make-up. Haha! But I think some men also put on make up nowadays - it's all part of the marketing plan by cosmetics giants. Anyway we all need to look good when we are out, don't we? It's all about creating good impression - that's how the world works. First impression counts.

Btw, thanks for dropping by my blog and leaving comments : )

  25. I'm not a mommy but I've let myself go in the beauty department as well. I actually get picked on a little bit when I wear makeup to work so I haven't for a little while.

    ReplyDelete
  26. You've got to be kidding me that you think that Ugly Betty picture looks better than you do. From the picture it looks like you have a nice complexion.

I too have started to feel frumpy and ugly every now and then. I stay at home with my girls and sometimes don't leave the house. I have to consciously tell myself to do something little to make myself feel pretty. Whether it's actually getting dressed in cute clothes or just putting on my makeup. Some women don't like or need makeup. I do.

Do whatever you need to do to make yourself feel better!

  27. Oh man, if I pulled out my grays, I'd have a headache! I'm way too young for that many, too! You are too funny!

    ReplyDelete
  28. LOL I know exactly what you meant in this post! I caught myself on Wednesday at work in the bathroom quickly trying to apply make-up because I'd caught a glimpse of me without it and I looked sooooooooooooooo tired. LOL I was never a make-up person as a teenager or through college, but I find I feel like I need it now in the professional sphere of mommyland/working mother. UGH.

  29. I think everyone goes through a stage where they want to glam it up, or just take it easy on the personal maintenance. I feel like a mess right now and can't do anything about it due to medical issues.

  30. Oh, you are pretty. It is so easy for us to get in the trap of letting ourselves go because we put everyone else first. That is why true beauty is defined from within. One day, we will have time for ourselves...for now, I enjoy to living in the moment.

I do agree that there are days when the old jeans and jacket are worn a little too much. I am trying to work on that a bit. Now that I have a teen I am expected to play the role of a up and hip mom.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Ugh. I do this too. Fall into the frumpy mommy trap. Then I go buy makeup and cute outfits and it lasts about a week or so.

    At least I try, right?

    ReplyDelete
  32. I love, love, love Sheer Cover...you know, the one Leeza Gibbons sells. It is amazing stuff! I do have to say...some days, I just don't feel like doing it all though. :)

  34. Those are some great tips! The way you can be humorous AND informative at the same time is awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Aww, are you kidding me? You're ADORABLE! But a little makeup can go a long way toward making you FEEL good. I own way more of it than I need - or care to admit to. :)

  36. Great post - I am also getting slack in some area in my life - I have a little post in my drafts folder but am reluctant to even let everybody know how lax I am. And BTW - I love Ugly Betty!

  37. Thanks for the tips, but you are definitely not an Ugly Betty:0)

  43. Are you kidding me? You're beautiful!

I AM the typical mom- clothes that are years old with stains from who-knows-what... Makeup what's that???? sigh.

I have a mom friend who always looks so nice and put together and I wonder why I can't be more like that....

    Happy SITS day!

  45. You are so right about the letting go. I've been trying to get back to my looking good self that hubby would see everytime he came home to visit from seminary back when we were both single and just friends. Thanks for the honesty and encouragement. I love the tip about the eye shadow in the corner of the eye.

  47. I RARELY wear make up. I could easily get away with it when I was younger, but now. EESH - the mirror is not being kind!

Great tips, however, to get me going!

    Happy SITS day!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Wow - I think my pic would compare to Ugly Betty right about now, too. You are braver than I am - I'd never post a pic of myself that I didn't LOVE! :)

  51. You ARE NOT "Ugly Betty"! I do know that I don't go anywhere without a little mascara...it can do wonders!

    ReplyDelete
  52. What great tips! And I always have the urge to pull out gray hairs too!

    ReplyDelete
  53. LOL, I have fallen into this rut, too! Thanks for the tips, there are no excuses to look frumpy now!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Sigh. I haven't worn makeup in forever. And I look so much better with it ... but I just can't seem to get off my butt and do anything about it.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I think it all falls back to that "taking care of everybody else first" thing that we women tend to do. By the time we get to ourselves, we are just flat wore out!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Great tips! I love makeup, though I stay away from Sephora and the like due to my own personal recession...

You are way prettier than Ugly Betty. With or without makeup.

    Congrats on your SITS day!

  57. Ugly Betty! That's funny!

  60. "In retrospect, I really don't know why makeup plays such a vital role in our lives as women."

Make-up seems so important to us because we are socialized to believe that we can not be beautiful or socially accepted without it. Media and advertisements burn it into us that we need the latest mascara, lip stick, etc to be beautiful... when in fact, we are beautiful just the way we are.

I know this is cliche, but beauty really does come from the inside out. If you feel good about yourself, you'll want to put you best self forward... whether or not that includes make-up, well, that's up to you. :)

    ReplyDelete
  61. Woah Ugly Betty ain't so ugly is she?!

I have become addicted to mascara...meaning that I don't wear it everyday but I think my face looks plain when I don't. Why don't men have these issues???

    ReplyDelete
  62. I need this post taped to my bathroom mirror.

I'm rocking the Bonnie Bell these days, and not much else!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Even without makeup, dear Maricris, you are no Ugly Betty. You have a natural, classic beauty with or without makeup! :O)

    ReplyDelete
  64. Congrats on being featured on SITS!

This is a great post, I love all the tips!! Some days I slide a little to far into "Shabbyland" too.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I have been caught up in the same trap. Just letting myself go and wearing sweats. It's starting to change but man oh man, it's easy to let it happen.

    ReplyDelete
  66. You look lovely in the sidebar pics so I can see why you'd think that about your "Ugly Betty" moment. I personally do not wear much makeup unless it's a special occasion like the rare dates that my dh and I go on.

I wish I had the typical gorgeous straight black hairs of Pinays, but sadly, I inherited my parents curls. Can't do much with them because it's so thick! Salons hate me actually because I can't stand all the pulling, so I don't go!

    Congrats on being featured!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Okay, you're beautiful. Sure, maybe there are some things you can do to make yourself more put together (though can't tell that from the picture), but don't forget that you're starting out with a pretty good canvas!

  74. Great tips! If I have a day when I don't want to wear make up, I at least put on mascara. You are so right! :)

    ReplyDelete
  75. I don't wear much makeup either..so I don't even have any mascara to color my grays..darn it! But, I will remember that tip..who woulda thought!

    ReplyDelete
  76. Even when they 'ugly' Betty up..she isn't really even ugly. I don't know where I would be without my chapstick..let me tell ya!

    ReplyDelete
  77. This was very enlightening. I'm a strictly mascara and lip gloss girl.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I hear ya! I say "hear hear" on the mascara! Happy SITS day!

    ReplyDelete
  79. I love mascara, I wish I could get it put on permanently!

    ReplyDelete
  80. I never wear make up. I totally missed the playing with make up phase as a teen and I have never gotten into it. When I get dressed up for really special occasions I wear lipstick, mascara and a neutral eye shadow. On a quotidian basis, nothing. So, don't feel too bad. We'll just look that much better when we do put on full face. I think it is better to not wear make up every day and shock people when you wear it than to wear it everyday and shock people when you don't ;)

    ReplyDelete
  81. Here from SITS! I have to agre with you...it's SO easy to stop taking care in your looks especially when you know you won't be going anywhere. I found though, that I am happier and friendlier when I feel good about my looks. AND we're more likely to actually leave the house if I'm put together. Great tips!

    ReplyDelete
  82. Your own little Twilight Zone! Oh, I relate, LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  83. Im glad blush, lipstick, and mascara was your tip because its all I have time for!

  86. UCK! I just realized I am in the Fabulous after 40 catagory! I just turned 40 a few weeks ago!

    ReplyDelete
  87. Why are women so dependant on makeup? You definately don't have this problem, but I am a blond meaning blond everything. Eyelashes, eybrows ugh! So if I don't put on make up (especially mascara) I totally disapear all together and up close I look like the ugliest man alive LOL!

You are a gorgeous woman even without makeup!

    ReplyDelete
  88. Okay, I totally need to find lighter lipstick now. hehe.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Your blog is fab!

I'm sure that mascara thing is true for the majority...but I know if I wore it all the time I'd forget to take it off and be miss raccoon. blech!

    Happy SITS day!

  90. Ugh, I have been feeling the exact same way lately. Winter makes it worse. Thanks for the tips, it's nice to seeI'm not alone.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Great post! I've been in a "Mommy Rut" lately. I definitely need a root touch up before I come to your house for a visit...OUCH!

    ReplyDelete
  92. You ugly Betty?! Never! I do have to admit that I "feel" different on days when I take the extra minute to put on my face. And most days I wear make-up. Before a few months ago...I NEVER wore it. Hated putting it on. Wonder what happened to me.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Happy SITS day!

You look SO much better in that "mug shot". I think sometimes we see ourselves more harshly than other people do.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Happy SITS day! Ack! This has been weighing on my mind that I am slipping into Ugly Betty syndrome too. Thanks for the tips. :)

    ReplyDelete
  95. Huh, I would totally put mascara in my hair. Any idea where I can buy red?

    ReplyDelete
  96. I'm so guilty of this. I never put a lick of makeup on, I know I look like a frumpy mom but at least my husband forgives me. Thanks for the tips.

    ReplyDelete
  97. I am guilty as charged... I know I should do more to make myself look better but seriously, I live in the mountains, it just ends up being a waste of money using my make-up. No one sees me!

    ReplyDelete
  98. I always pull out my gray hair! I know I shouldn't though.

    ReplyDelete
  99. I can totally relate, I've totally let myself go since my twins were born. Some days I'm lucky to squeeze in a shower, but on the days where I'm able to put on some presentable clothes and a bit of makeup I feel so much better about myself.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I hate make-up - but I do feel the pressure to wear it in order to look more alive and presentable. Fun blog!

  101. Great post! We all have those ugly betty days!

    Happy SITS Day!

  102. came via SITS....

I think if I painted my greys with mascara... well... my whole head would be covered and I would look like one huge fake eylash was stuck on my head....

  103. Mascara and lipgloss are my staples, too. And also eyeliner. I just need it!

    ReplyDelete
  104. Something we all struggle with, finding the time to take care of ourselves as well as everything else!

    ReplyDelete
  105. I don't know why we all buy into the makeup thing. But my biggest reason for falling to that shabbyland rut is time...I hate spending all that precious time to get dolled up just to run out to the store. And now that I AM 40...I really hate getting dressed. Nothing fits like it should. arrgg!

    ReplyDelete
  106. I hear ya girl! When I put on a little make up and take a few minutes to tyr and look nice, I feel so good about myself! Just because we are moms, we don't have to let go of ourselves, hehe. I appreciate the tips!

  108. Hi, I'm stopping by from SITS (a day late, sorry!)! I love the tip about mascara on grey hairs. I am saddened to admit that I am only 23 and I am already experiencing some of those! Like you, I am tempted to pull them out. I will take your advice from now on. Thanks!!

    ReplyDelete
  109. Oh I'm with you on the ummm not maximizing my appearance lately. Ponytail. Tinted moisturizer and a touch of eyeliner. That was it. Hmmm.
